ORIGIN OF NAME KANGRA

ORIGIN OF NAME KANGRA

Susruta[4century A.D] is considered father of Indian surgery much like Hippocrates and Galen of western school of medicine. In some areas the Indian surgeons of those times were much ahead of their contemporaries in west and elsewhere.
Despite little knowledge of working of human body ie physiology ,many complex surgeries like caesarean sections, setting of bones, highly skilled reconstruction surgeries of ear, nose, lips and face were performed. There were well laid out procedures for these surgeries, which were carried out under aseptic conditions, within the premises of temples only.
As many battles of those times, with consequent mutilation of face and limbs, were fought in north-western India, many temples providing such specialised surgeries became popular.Area of modern day Kangra was specially famous for reconstruction surgeries of ear and nose.People from nearby and far off places used to come to these areas for these plastic surgeries-Medical tourism of those times!!
According to many scholars the name KANGRA is derived from two words-Karn orKaan meaning ear&Ghda meaning 'to make' signifying it as a place where specialised ear reconstruction surgeries were carried out.
So dear friends ,next time you hear someone say Kangra, lend some ear to it and silently salute your forefathers, who made this possible! ENT surgeons of Kangra valley have a great reputation to match.
Thanks!
